Citizen power for China (a.k.a. Initiatives for China) holds “Head Shaving for Liu Xia” event in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC on March 7, attracting almost 30 activists and supporters from Washington and New York. The 2010 Nobel Peace Laurent Liu Xiaobo’s wife Liu Xia has been under illegal house arrest since October 2010. In the last three and half years, her health has been deteriorated. Citizen Power for China (Initiatives for China), and other human rights groups have been working hard to call global attention to her case, and yet have not achieved any major breakthrough due to the restricted control of the Chinese authorities. Liu Xia has an image of shaved head for a long time, and the “Care For Liu Xia’s Freedom” group in Hong Kong on Valentine’s Day called for the general public to join her in shaving their heads in an effort to highlight her illegal house arrest.

Citizen Power for China has called supporters to participate in this growing movement since Valentine’s Day. Dr Yang Jianli, founder of Citizen Power for China, shaved his head in his Washington residence, and posted his shining image online the same day to show his full support. Dr. Yang highlighted Liu Xia’s case when he attended the Geneva Summer for Human Rights on February 25 to urge international community to join efforts in win freedom for Liu Xia.

Citizen Power held series of events in Washington DC, Boston, Sydney and Paris in support of Liu Xia. On March 7 at 2:00 p.m. local time in Washington DC, Dr Yang Jianli, Dr. Han Lianchao, Dr. Wang Jianying, Zhang Wen, Yang Yuhan, Li Hong, Bi Shiqiang, and Zhang Jing and other volunteers began shaving their heads in bitter cold weather. Human rights defense lawyer Xiao Guozhen, a key member of the citizen movement, also joined the movement as a “barber.” Xiao Guozhen has just escaped from China a few months ago amid deteriorating working conditions for her peers.

After shaving event, Dr Yang Jianli, Dr Han Lianchao, Dr Wang Jianying, and Xiao Guozhen talked to the media, stating that there is no legal basis for having Liu Xia under house arrest. Only she is the wife of Liu Xiaobo. Such a brutal violation of basic human rights must be condemned. They call for the general public who cares for the human rights cause, and China’s democratization issues shall work together to improve her living conditions, and help win her early freedom.

The Chinese Embassy remains closed and silent during the March 7 event.
